I was very excited when I recently got asked to make a football cake for a surprise 80th birthday party. The concept of a football field immediately came to mind and when I saw this football pan, I knew I wanted a 3-D football to sit in the middle. With the Super Bowl coming up, I figured it was perfect timing to share this cake. If you are hosting or going to a Super Bowl party, this would be a fun dessert that feeds a lot of people. You definitely don’t need to go crazy piping grass with pastry bags like I did. You could simply frost the sheet cake with green frosting and write the team names at either end. This cake featured the guest of honor’s high school and college football teams, but you can obviously customize your cake to feature a game between any two teams of your choice.
If you want to give this exact cake a try, here is what you will need:
1 sheet cake (made using 2 batches of a 2-layer cake recipe, I used the chocolate cake recipe from this post)
1 football cake (made with one 2-layer cake recipe in a football pan)
Vanilla Frosting (I tripled the recipe from this post)
1 pastry bag with a round tip and 1 pastry bag with a grass tip
Plastic football players and goal posts (should be able to find at Michaels, or other crafts stores)
Begin by baking your sheet cake and football cake and let them cool to room temperature. Dye a large portion of your vanilla frosting green. Leave some white and dye the rest whatever other colors you may need for your opposing teams. Cover the entire sheet cake with a thin layer of green frosting and then place the football cake into the middle of the cake. Frost the football cake with the chocolate frosting and then use a piping bag to pipe the grass, field lines, team names and football details onto the cake.
