This latest baking project is one of my all-time favorites. Pretty much anything that involves baking AND arts and crafts instantly grabs my attention. While it may look like I had some fun with magic markers, I promise these cookies are completely edible and so much fun to create!
I split this project into two days by baking the cookies one day and covering and decorating them the next. If you have never worked with fondant before, this is an easy way to start. I usually purchase Wilton brand fondant from a local party store. I rolled the fondant to about 1/4” thickness and then used the same cookie cutter that I used for the cookies to cut square shapes. The fondant attaches to the cookies with a little vanilla icing and you are ready to paint!
All you need is some food coloring and a couple of small paintbrushes to create these designs. I used gel food coloring and mixed it with a tiny bit of clear vanilla extract. You could also use vodka. The alcohol evaporates quickly, allowing your designs to dry perfectly. Fondant is not the most delicious, but it is edible. You can also just peel it off before devouring, if you’re not a fan. Making these cookies is such a fun activity if you have the time (i.e. you’re also on summer break). They would definitely make the best party favors or a great birthday party activity!
I used this sugar cookie recipe and this vanilla icing recipe to attach the fondant to the cookies. **Fondant is easily purchased from your local craft/party supply store. Sprinkle your counter with cornstarch before rolling the fondant to prevent sticking.
